About UTMBridge 26

Since its inception in 1999, the UTM Bridge Model Competition has grown into a well-recognized platform that nurtures creativity, innovation, and engineering excellence among students in the fields of Civil Engineering and Architecture.

Over the years, UTMBridge has evolved from a university-level initiative into a nationally and internationally acclaimed competition, attracting participation from institutions around the world. The competition has consistently served as a benchmark for experiential learning, where theoretical knowledge is transformed into practical engineering solutions through hands-on model design, construction, and testing.

UTMBridge 26 continues this proud legacy by providing a dynamic platform for future engineers, designers, and technocrats to explore structural behavior, material efficiency, and constructability under real testing conditions. Participants are challenged not only to achieve structural strength and efficiency, but also to demonstrate creativity, sustainability, and innovation in their designs.

More than a competition, UTMBridge 26 fosters collaboration, knowledge exchange, and international networking among students, academics, and industry professionals. It reflects UTM’s commitment to advancing engineering education through problem-based learning and real-world application, preparing graduates to meet the evolving challenges of the built environment.

Competition Timeline

23 April 2026

Pre-Registration (Open Participation)

Pre-registration is open to all interested teams. This step allows participants to register their intent to join UTMBridge 2026. However, pre-registration does not guarantee participation in the competition.

Submission of Proposal

All pre-registered teams are required to submit a design proposal in accordance with the competition guidelines. The proposal must demonstrate the design concept, structural system, and feasibility of the bridge model.

Competition Day

Finalist teams will participate in the on-site competition, which includes model construction, exhibition, testing, and assessment, followed by the award and closing ceremony.

Competition Categories

UTMBridge 26 is open to students from various educational levels and is structured into two main competition categories to ensure fair assessment and meaningful participation.

1. Undergraduate Category

This category is open to undergraduate students from local and international universities, colleges, and institutions of higher learning offering programmes in Civil Engineering, Architecture, or related built environment disciplines.

Participants in this category are expected to demonstrate a strong understanding of structural behaviour, material efficiency, and engineering design principles. Emphasis is placed on innovation, constructability, creativity, and performance under load testing, reflecting real-world engineering challenges.

2. School Category

This category is open to secondary school students (upper secondary level) from local and international schools.

The School Category aims to introduce students to fundamental engineering concepts through hands-on learning. Participants are encouraged to explore creativity, teamwork, and basic structural principles in a guided and educational environment, fostering early interest in engineering and the built environment.

Video Description

Leonardo da Vinci Bridge

The School Category of UTMBridge 26 is designed to introduce secondary school students to fundamental engineering concepts through hands-on, creative learning. This category focuses on problem-solving, teamwork, and basic structural understanding in an engaging and supportive environment.

For this category, participants will be provided with surprise construction materials on the competition day. Teams are required to design and construct their bridge models using only the materials supplied by the organizer. This approach encourages creativity, adaptability, and quick thinking, while ensuring a fair and level playing field for all participants.

The bridge design concept for the School Category is based on the Da Vinci Bridge, a self-supporting structure inspired by the innovative ideas of Leonardo da Vinci. The concept emphasizes interlocking elements, structural stability without fasteners, and an intuitive understanding of load transfer and equilibrium.

Through this challenge, students will gain early exposure to engineering principles such as structural behavior, balance, and efficiency, while experiencing the excitement of real-world problem solving. The School Category aims to inspire young minds and cultivate interest in Civil Engineering and the built environment.
